Eastlake - A Unique Seattle Community
Carefully nestled between route I-5 and the eastern shore of Lake Union, Eastlake is an interesting neighborhood defined by its clusters of double and triple-decker houseboats intertwined with gorgeous gardens and connected with boardwalks designed to add a strong sense of community. Somewhat limited by its borders, Eastlake’s population has chosen to build up from a sleepy enclave of houseboats to an upscale community of deluxe residences that happen to float alongside the shores of Lake Union.
With roots that stretch back to the 1890s and industrial enterprises, Eastlake has transformed itself into a bustling neighborhood filled with apartments, single-family homes, eclectic shops, and tasteful restaurants. Operating as a cooperative and sporting a giant dragon, The Eastlake Zoo is well known as one of Seattle’s friendliest taverns. One of the local treasures, the Italian restaurant Serafina offers a fine taste of Italy’s best recipes.
Popular with local athletes, Roger’s Playground provides soccer, baseball, and softball fields along with a play area for children. Another important focal point for the community, Fariview Park, Seattle’s first end-of-the-street park, provides a place for family and friends to enjoy delightful water views from an artistic standpoint.
The locals promote green living by planting trees along the streets and preserving land through parks. The local community’s cultural awareness is enhanced through the public art, community activities, and special programs promoted seasonally by the Eastlake Community Council. Perhaps Eastlake’s most famous moments came when it gained notoriety during the filming of “Sleepless in Seattle,” a romantic movie or when Boeing established its first factory there. |
